Obleas - A Colombian Street Classic

Obleas are a beloved Colombian street treat built on contrast and simplicity. Two thin, crisp wafers sandwich a layer of arequipe, a rich, caramel-like spread, often finished with toppings like cheese, jam, coconut, or condensed milk. You’ll find them sold from carts and small shops across Colombia, made fresh and assembled to order. They’re light in texture but deeply satisfying, balancing sweetness with just a bit of crunch.

That same balance is what makes obleas such a natural companion to coffee. The caramel notes in the filling echo the chocolatey sweetness found in a well-roasted Colombian cup, while the wafers keep things from feeling too heavy. It’s an easy pairing, something you can enjoy slowly, whether as an afternoon treat or alongside your morning brew.

We’re including our favorite recipe from Taste Atlas here, so you can make them at home!
